A Medaglia d’Oro for Lael Doug Cauthen, bidding on behalf of Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stable, secured a son of Medaglia d’Oro for $385,000 during Sunday’s session of the Keeneland September sale. Hip 1397 is out of Loving Vindication (Vindication), a daughter of graded stakes winner Chimichurri (Elusive Quality).
“He’s a heck of a nice physical,” Cauthen said. How couldn’t you like him?” It was Lael Stables’s third purchase of the September sale. The operation also acquired a son of Curlin (hip 40) for $170,000 and a filly by Eskendereya (hip 635) for $220,000. Cauthen admitted bidding at the September sale has been contentious.
It’s very difficult, the market is very, very strong,” he said. I was actually surprised we were able to get this colt. I thought he was going to bring $500,000 or more and we couldn’t have been there at that. I think that is a fair price for him, but the way the market is, I thought he might bring more.” The dark bay colt was consigned by her breeder Anderson Farms.
